KOTA KINABALU: A businessman in Sabah has been arrested by graft busters for allegedly submitting false claims totalling RM45,000 for raw material supplies to an education office in a district of Sabah.

The materials were supposedly meant for maintenance and repair work at local schools.

A source revealed that the suspect, in his 40s, was detained when he came to provide a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office at 12.30am on Friday (Oct 25).

After the arrest, the suspect was taken to the Magistrate’s Court later that morning.

Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng issued a seven-day remand order against him, ending on Nov 1.

“The suspect is believed to have submitted two claims for RM20,000 and RM25,000 this year,” said the source.

The claims were for supplying raw materials for school repairs, but the materials were never delivered.

Sabah MACC chief Datuk S Karunanithy confirmed the case, stating it’s being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 for falsified claims.

He added that several more follow-up arrests are expected in connection to the case.
