KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has acquired new leads in its investigation into the theft of rare earth elements (REE) in Kedah, according to its Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki (pic).
He stated that during the course of the investigation, the MACC also enlisted the expertise of specialists to determine the quantity and duration of time that the REE had potentially been stolen, through laboratory tests.
“Investigations are currently underway concerning corruption, abuse of power, and breach of trust relating to the individuals and enforcement agencies involved,” he said in a Friday (Oct 6) interview.
However, he refrained from disclosing further information regarding the matter due to concerns that it may impede the investigation process.
In July, media reports highlighted that 10 state executive council (exco) members were summoned by the MACC to provide statements as assistance in the REE case investigation.
It was also reported that the MACC had apprehended a senior officer from the Kedah Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) and a female director of a company to assist in the investigation of a corruption case involving over RM13 million, as well as allegations of abuse of power in relation to illegal REE mining.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor confirmed in September that he had provided his statement to the MACC concerning the case. – Bernama
