KLUANG: Early voting for the Mahkota by-election has begun for the 4,510 army personnel and their spouses as well as 401 policemen.

They will cast their ballots at the Dewan Mahkota at Kem Mahkota, Dewan Pengaman Zamrud Taman Perumahan at the Kluang district headquarters and SK Sultan Sir Ibrahim here on Tuesday (Sept 24).

The early voting centres opened from 8am and voting will go on until 5pm. Military personnel and their spouses, who also brought along their children, were seen queuing up at Kem Mahkota from as early as 7am.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast good weather in Kluang this morning, followed by thunderstorms expected in the afternoon, Bernama reported.

The Mahkota by-election, polling for which is this Saturday (Sept 28), is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, 40, and Perikatan Nasional’s Mohamad Haizan Jaafar, 61.

The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent assemblyman, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.

The Mahkota state constituency, which falls under the Kluang parliamentary constituency, has a total of 66,318 registered voters.
