In Ipoh, Loh Sze Yee, the Perak tourism committee chairman, stated that maintenance and upgrading work will be carried out at certain tourist attractions in the state during Visit Perak Year 2024, and that this work is unavoidable.
He acknowledged that visitors may be disappointed at not being able to visit some of these locations, but stressed the importance of continuing with the necessary works.
Loh specified that iconic locations like the Ipoh Town Hall or the state museum will be left open for visitors, even though he believes it is a short-sighted approach to do so, as these buildings also need to be looked after for the long-term.
He made these comments at a press conference following the ground-breaking ceremony for the M Hill Hotel project in Greentown on Thursday (Feb 22).
Loh emphasized the need to upgrade these buildings to ensure visitors’ safety and pointed out that there is no guarantee of funding being available in next year’s budget if the required work is not carried out during Visit Perak Year 2024.
He addressed concerns raised about the closure of some tourist locations due to maintenance work and explained that the state has many historical buildings that have not been properly maintained, regardless of when Visit Perak Year is held.
Loh stressed the crucial nature of maintaining these premises, stating that various issues will arise every year and that it is necessary to address them consistently.
