The consul general of China in Penang, Zhou Youbin, has stated that Malaysia and China will continue to work closely together to achieve sustained growth. Zhou made this statement during a reception for the People’s Republic of China’s 74th anniversary, highlighting that 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
Zhou noted that over the past decade, China and Malaysia have maintained frequent high-level interactions, deepened political mutual trust, and achieved fruitful outcomes in practical cooperation. He further mentioned that in the first seven months of this year, the bilateral trade volume between the two countries reached US$106.68 billion (RM504.49 billion), according to statistics.
The Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow, who was also present at the reception, acknowledged the remarkable growth and development of China throughout the years. He expressed gratitude for the strengthening bonds between Penang and Xiamen, as a delegation from Penang recently participated in the China International Fair for Investment and Trade and the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Xiamen-Penang Sister City relationship, fostering mutual benefits for both regions.
Chow highlighted that diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China date back to 1974 and have flourished over the years. He emphasized that China has remained Malaysia’s top trade partner for 14 consecutive years, as confirmed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The high trade value between the two countries reflects China’s position as an economic powerhouse on the global stage.
Chow concluded by stating that the founding of a nation is not only a historical event for its citizens but also a testament to the power of determination and cooperation.
