PETALING JAYA: It is indisputable that Malaysia is a nation comprising multiple races, and its diversity should be celebrated by all, according to advocates of moderation and social activists.
One prominent advocate for moderation, Anas Zubedy, stressed the importance of refraining from politically exploiting issues related to race and religion.
He stated, “Using race as political leverage is divisive and inappropriate. Although it may garner votes through fear, it is not the right way to govern a country.”
Anas was responding to the Prime Minister’s recent statement, emphasizing that being Malay should not be a justification for denying the rights of others as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.
Responding to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s recent statement that “Malaysia is a Malay country”, social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye reiterated that Malaysia is a nation belonging to individuals of diverse races and religions. He emphasized that Malaysians have always come together as one family, guided by the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara.
Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye stated, “Unity in diversity is a value we hold dear, and we must continue to cherish it.”
Lawyer and moderation advocate Siti Kasim highlighted the need for the government to translate these principles into action with appropriate policies.
She said, “The Prime Minister must implement policies that reflect such inclusive thinking. Genuine belief in these principles should be demonstrated through concrete actions, rather than mere rhetoric.”
Siti Kasim further emphasized the urgency of addressing the pressing needs of the people, stating that the priority should be assisting struggling individuals in putting food on their tables, rather than engaging in power play.
