KUALA LUMPUR: According to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s diverse and multiracial society can serve as an example of a more inclusive world. In his keynote address at the Islam-Confucianism Leadership Dialogue (ICLD), the Prime Minister stated that Malaysia is uniquely situated in the discourse of social and political development.
He emphasized that Malaysia’s diverse heritage offers a unique perspective and the opportunity to shape a new era of global ethical governance, drawing lessons from its rich civilizations and aiming to be more representative of the global population.
He highlighted that the fundamental issue at hand is ethics and that by embracing the wisdom of Islam and Confucianism, the country can work towards a future that is technologically advanced and morally enlightened.
Anwar also pointed out that both Confucianism and Islam emphasize moral empowerment, teaching people about balance, ethical conduct, and the importance of the collective good. These teachings are integral to enlightened leadership in both traditions.
He expressed that drawing from ancient philosophies can guide the country towards more sustainable, equitable, and ethical paths in this age of rapid technological advancement and environmental crisis.
Anwar also referenced the Malaysia Madani concept, where environmental sustainability is one of the six pillars of the national policy framework. He stressed the importance of understanding the relationship between man and nature as one of interconnectedness and respect.
He added that this understanding is crucial as many global challenges stem from humanity’s actions and decisions.
During the event, Anwar engaged in a virtual discourse with prominent Confucian scholar Prof Tu Wei Ming, as well as other notable figures in attendance such as Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Boao Confucian Entrepreneurs Forum president Prof Li Honglei and ICLD organizing committee chairman Lee Chean Chung.
