Selangor MB says it is time for national reconciliation to strengthen economy
NATIONAL unity is crucial for Malaysia to unlock its potential and gain global recognition as a powerful and respected country, according to Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
Speaking at the state-level National Day celebrations in Shah Alam, Selangor, Amirudin called for reconciliation from both national leaders and society now that the state elections are over.
In reflecting on Malaysia’s journey since gaining independence, Amirudin stressed the importance of introspection and commemorating sacrifices.
“By the time Malaysia reaches its 100th anniversary, what kind of nation do we envision? What can we, as citizens, do to foster an attitude of dignity and develop a dignified economy that allows Malaysians to compete internationally?” he pondered.
Amirudin highlighted the need for Malaysia to aim higher: “Should we be content with being local champions while our neighboring countries surpass us and leave us far behind?”
He emphasized that it is not enough to simply gather and display patriotism on National Day. Instead, he called for unity, respect for Islam and other religions, adherence to the constitutional monarchy, and the principles of Rukun Negara (the national philosophy), which would bear witness to Malaysia’s success.
The state-level National Day celebrations at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam witnessed the participation of people from all age groups and walks of life, setting an upbeat atmosphere as they eagerly awaited the countdown.
The evening’s program, which began at 9pm and extended past midnight, showcased dance performances by students and a parade featuring 61 contingents comprising school bands, government agencies, and military personnel.
Various performances by Shah Alam City Council, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corporation (Padat), Iman Troye, and Ziana Zain kept the public entertained throughout the night.
The tactical and technical demonstrations by the Royal Malaysian Navy, Royal Malaysian Police, and the Fire and Rescue Department stole the show.
The event was attended by the leadership of the Selangor government, state executive council members, district officers, local council heads, and community representatives.
During the event, Amirudin made a special donation to the Selangor Armed Forces Veterans Association and the Selangor Ex-Police Association. Additionally, he presented the Tokoh Kemerdekaan Selangor (Selangor Independence Figure Award) to the family members of the late Lieutenant Adnan Saidi, a World War II hero who fought against Japanese forces.
As the clock struck midnight, seven roars of “Merdeka” (Independence) reverberated across Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam, accompanied by countless Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) flying in the air. The night sky was further illuminated by a spectacular five-minute fireworks display, leading to the final performance of the evening by rock legend Awie.
