In order to enhance the efficiency and safety of the construction industry, Malaysia must adopt more automation and utilize artificial intelligence, according to Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the Works Minister. He emphasized that the increasing urbanization trend will lead to a higher demand for built environments, including underground structures.

Speaking at the opening of the South East Asian Conference and Exhibition in Tunnelling and Underground Space (Seacetus 2024), Nanta highlighted the importance of connectivity and transport infrastructure in Malaysia’s development towards becoming a regional hub for innovation.

The event, organized by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), aimed to position Malaysia as a leading center for tunnel-related activities, collaborating with global organizations such as the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA).

Nanta commended Malaysia’s successful utilization of underground space, citing projects like the Stormwater and Traffic Management Tunnel (SMART), transport tunnels for MRT lines, and the ongoing East Coast Rail Link (ECRL). He emphasized the acceleration of technology adoption and innovation outlined in the 12th Malaysia Plan to integrate AI and automation in the country’s digital economy.

Highlighting the significance of AI and automation in enhancing safety and productivity in tunnelling projects, Nanta expressed optimism for further innovation built upon past successes, such as the world’s first fleet of autonomous tunnel boring machines used in the Putrajaya MRT line construction.

Ongoing rail projects like the ECRL showcase Malaysia’s commitment to improving connectivity and economic development across various states. Nanta also mentioned initiatives like the proposed Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail as part of efforts to elevate Malaysia’s status as a high-income nation through advanced transportation networks.

The Works Ministry is prepared to support initiatives that strengthen the underground construction ecosystem and produce more skilled personnel, Nanta assured. He commended the collaboration between the IEM and the organizing committee with industry leaders and experts in the conference and exhibition.

At the conference, ITA president Prof Arnold Dix shared a poignant account of his involvement in a rescue mission during a tunnelling accident in India, where 41 workers were trapped in the Silkyara Tunnel for 17 days before being rescued. The incident highlighted the importance of safety measures in underground construction.
