Malaysia is vying for the presidency of the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) Assembly for the term 2026-2029, according to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. The ministry has been given the task of making all necessary preparations to achieve this goal.

Nga stated, “The Cabinet has decided that the Housing and Local Government Ministry will represent the country in the nomination for president of the UN-Habitat Assembly. Therefore, we will start preparations to elevate Malaysia’s status on that platform,” during a breaking of the fast event with media practitioners on Thursday night (April 4).

UN-Habitat is dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities to ensure adequate shelter for all. Furthermore, Nga revealed that the Housing and Local Government Ministry Media Excellence Awards 2024, scheduled for November 8, will offer a total cash prize of RM59,000.

He mentioned that this year’s edition includes eight categories covering housing, local authorities, firefighting, urban sustainability, green environment, solid waste management, and community credit. These categories consist of the Special Minister’s Award, Best Television Broadcasting, Best Video (Portal/Online), Best Radio Broadcasting, Best Article Publishing, Best Photo Journalism, Best Social Media Content, and Popular/Choice Video Award.

The ministry has decided to continue this prestigious award for the second time after receiving 365 entries from various media agencies last year. Nga expressed his satisfaction with the entries that have significantly aided the ministry in disseminating accurate information to the public.

He hopes that the programme will continue to motivate media practitioners to assist the government in addressing sensitive issues raised by certain parties that could potentially undermine the harmony and well-being of the people in this multiracial nation. – Bernama
