KUALA LUMPUR: Despite Malaysia being placed in Tier 2 of the United States State Department Trafficking In Persons (TIP) 2024 report, the Home Ministry will continue to make improvements in curbing human trafficking and forced labour, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
“We welcome the upgrade to Tier 2 (from Tier-2 Watch List last year), but more work must be done. We are committed to improving and achieving Tier 1 (in the TIP report),” he told reporters after attending the closing ceremony for the Retired Senior Police Officers Association of Malaysia’s annual general meeting on Tuesday (June 25).

Saifuddin Nasution said efforts would focus on improving several aspects, especially capacity building and inter-agency cooperation.
“We will also maintain indicators that would improve our TIP rating and improve relevant laws and regulations,” he said.

“Last year, we scrutinised 19 aspects we had to improve upon. We worked on it for about a year, and the result is evident,” he said.
Saifuddin Nasution also said he relayed Malaysia’s commitment to reaching Tier 1 to the American Ambassador to Malaysia and representatives of the State Department in a meeting recently.
