KUALA LUMPUR: Thirty dance participants representing Malaysia emerged victorious in all the categories they competed in at the Vienna Dance Open 2023 competition in Austria.
In a statement, the Education Ministry announced that all the participants received recognition at the Malam Citra Budaya event, which took place at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Arts and Cultural Centre on Sunday (Aug 27).
The ministry’s Sports, Co-curriculum and Arts Division director, Zainuren Mohd Nor, presented appreciation certificates to the participants.
According to the statement, “The success not only showcased the talents of the student participants and choreographers, who are also teachers, but also effectively represented Malaysian cultural arts on the global stage.”
They dominated in several categories, including the folk group children category with their performance of Tarian Rakyat Patendu Patende (first place and best choreography). They also won first place in the junior folk duo category with Tarian Zapin Bertingkah and in the junior folk group category with Tari Cekuh Dabus. Additionally, they won first place in the senior folk solo category with Tarian Wayang Kulit Mek Siti Dewi, as well as in the Tarian Sewang and Tarian Borneo Susumangod Tondu categories. Furthermore, they received the award for the best overall presentation.
The statement highlighted the contributions of three choreographers who worked tirelessly to ensure that the dances and music reflected the Malaysian identity on the international stage.
Meanwhile, the 30 dance participants hailed from various schools and institutions, including Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jalan 3, Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor; Kolej Tunku Kurshiah (TKC) and SM Sains Tuanku Munawir (SASER), Negri Sembilan; Sekolah Tun Fatimah, Johor; SK Putrajaya Presint 8(1), Putrajaya; Management Science University, Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Raffles College.
The national contingent was led by Siti Dewi Marsitah Ismail, the senior administrative assistant of SMK Seksyen 4 Bandar Kinrara. – Bernama
