MALAYSIAN filmmaker Chong Keat Aun’s (pic) latest film, Snow in Midsummer, has received nominations in nine categories at the esteemed Golden Horse Awards, as per a report by Sin Chew Daily.

The film, which explores the aftermath of the May 13 racial riots in Malaysia, has been recognized across multiple categories including best director, best feature film, best screenplay, best supporting actress, best cinematography, best makeup and costume, best original soundtrack, best original film song, and best sound effects.

Expressing gratitude to the organizers, the award-winning director acknowledged that the film is a result of collaborative efforts between colleagues from Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

On Facebook, he wrote, “It took us 14 years to complete the filming of Snow in Midsummer, and it is dedicated to those who perished on May 13 and those who survived.”

Elaine Ng, one of the nominees, had previously received a Golden Horse Award nomination in the same category for her work on Ola Bola in 2016.

The premiere of Snow in Midsummer at the Venice International Film Festival left audiences deeply touched.

Given its sensitive subject matter, Chong expressed uncertainty about the film’s approval by the Malaysian Film Censorship Board.

The 45-year-old filmmaker from Kedah, who was previously a deejay at Ai FM under RTM, earned the Best New Director award at the 2020 Golden Horse Awards for The Story of the Southern Islet.

This movie, inspired by Chong’s personal experiences and local beliefs, revolves around a woman’s quest to break what is believed to be a curse on her husband.

    >According to China Press, Andy Lau expressed his willingness to sacrifice his life for his country if he were to become a police officer one day.

While promoting his new film, Moscow Mission, the 62-year-old actor highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement officers in their service to the nation.

Reflecting on the movie, which retells the infamous trans-Siberian train robberies of 1993, Lau emphasized the challenges encountered then due to the absence of extradition treaties between China and Russia.

“If I were to become a police officer one day, I would do the same thing; I would be willing to give my life to serve my country,” he said.

“I believe individuals with unique identities, such as police officers or firefighters, would risk their lives to save others,” he added.
