According to Fahmi Fadzil, the law to create the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is almost ready and in its final stages of preparation. Despite not providing a specific timeline, the Communications Minister expressed optimism that the Bill would be completed soon. The long process to develop the Bill involved consulting with the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) and seeking approval from the Cabinet.
Fahmi Fadzil stated, “With this, we are hopeful that it (establishment of the MMC) will be concluded in the not-too distant future,” during his speech at the launch of the new Malaysian Code of Ethics for Journalists on Tuesday (Feb 20).
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching previously mentioned on Jan 18 that a draft Cabinet memorandum on the MMC Bill was being prepared for submission to the AGC for approval. The ministry was optimistic that the Bill could be ready for tabling at the Dewan Rakyat meeting from Feb 26 to March 27, with a fallback plan to present it at the subsequent second meeting in June.
