Malaysians residing in South Korea have been advised to stay vigilant as a nationwide civil defence drill is set to occur on Wednesday (Aug 23) at 2pm local time. The exercise, which will last for 20 minutes, aims to prepare for potential air raids. The Malaysian embassy in Seoul, through a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), has urged Malaysians to closely follow directives from local authorities during the drill.
The drill will begin with an air-raid warning and will end with a siren indicating the conclusion of the exercise at 2.20pm. According to the statement, “Following the air-raid warning, the authorities will restrict the movement of residents and the operation of vehicles for approximately 15 minutes.”
It is important to note that this exercise does not signify an actual emergency event. Nonetheless, cooperation with the authorities is strongly advised, including staying updated through local media outlets like television and radio.
The statement highlights the following instructions for individuals: “If directed by authorities, drivers should park or pull over by the side of the road according to police instructions. Pedestrians should move to the nearest safe haven or underground shelter. When arriving at a shelter, follow the instructions of the emergency staff.”
Additional information about the drill and shelter locations can be found on the Ministry of Interior and Safety’s website at https://www.mois.go.kr/eng/a01/engMain.do or by downloading the Emergency Ready App (https://agent.safekorea.go.kr/idsiSCH/era_pop.jsp).
In case of an emergency, individuals can contact the embassy via +8210 8974 8699 or email, [email protected], as stated in the released statement.
Last Thursday (Aug 17), South Korea’s Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced that a civil defence drill to prepare for air raids would be held for 20 minutes, during which the general public would be evacuated to a safe place.
It is worth noting that fifty-seven areas, which were declared as special disaster areas due to heavy rain in July and Typhoon Khanun, will be excluded from the exercise. This marks the first time in six years, according to international media. – Bernama
