KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia maintains its ‘no nuclear policy’ for power generation, according to Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Speaking at the “National Energy Transition Roadmap: Navigating the Energy Transition, What’s Next for Malaysia?” event in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (July 20), Nik Nazmi stated that while small modular reactors (SMR) have potential, the government has no plans to pursue nuclear power generation due to environmental concerns.
“Small modular reactors differ from large ones like Hiroshima or Chernobyl.
“Public persuasion is necessary, and currently, we have not achieved that. Thus, nuclear energy exploration is not on our agenda for the near future,” he said during the roundtable session.- Bernama
