SEPANG: Hannah Yeoh, the Youth and Sports Minister, has requested an allocation of RM3.9mil for Malaysia’s preparation for the 2028 Hockey5s World Cup. The men’s team finished as runners-up at the Hockey5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman on Jan 31, losing 2-5 to Holland, and Hannah stated that their achievement should be acknowledged as a new development.
Hannah expressed confidence that the budget request for the preparation of the men’s and women’s teams towards the 2028 Hockey5s World Cup will be approved by the Finance Ministry. She emphasized the need to start the preparation now and has submitted a budget of RM3.9mil to the Finance Ministry to provide support towards their preparation for the Hockey5s World Cup in 2028.
Hannah stressed the urgency of the preparation, stating, “Hockey5s is a new event, but Malaysia’s achievement at the World Cup in Oman is one of the highest in hockey. We should not wait until 2026 or 2027 to start the preparation as Malaysia will be facing stiffer competition at the next World Cup due to increased competition from other teams.”
Hannah also confirmed that the men’s team will receive an incentive of RM80,000 for their success in Oman. The women’s team secured a creditable sixth-place finish at the Hockey5s World Cup in Oman last week.
