GUA MUSANG: On Friday (Sept 29), the tiger that was believed to have been attacking pet dogs of the Temiar Orang Asli community in Pos Bihai since July was finally caught. Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department director, Mohamad Hafid Rohani, stated that the male tiger, now named “Apek Bihai”, is around two years old and was found to be in good health when captured. He mentioned that the department received a complaint from Kampung Hak villagers in July, which prompted them to set a trap on Aug 6. Furthermore, more traps were laid on Sept 8 with assistance from the Malayan Tiger Conservation Unit (UKHM).
According to Mohamad Hafid, “Apek Bihai” will be transferred to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Sungkai, Perak. The department’s records show that the first case of a tiger attack at Pos Bihai occurred on July 5, 2021, involving a tiger named “Syamilla Bihai”. This incident resulted in severe injuries to an Orang Asli man. Thankfully, “Syamilla Bihai” was successfully captured and placed at the wildlife rescue centre.
The second incident took place on Jan 7 last year, when an Orang Asli man was fatally attacked by a tiger. In order to protect themselves during the operation, Perhilitan personnel had no choice but to shoot the tiger dead.
