Two individuals tragically lost their lives when the car they were in veered off the road and plunged into the sea in Lahad Datu late Saturday night. The victims were identified as 26-year-old Edwin and his father-in-law, Chan Wai Hou, 65. Prior to the accident, it was reported that there was a heated argument between the two men.
Lahad Datu’s deputy police chief, Supt Jimmy Panyau, stated that a relative of Edwin who was present at the Payang fish breeding pond recounted that Edwin intended to drop off Chan at home before returning to pick up other family members. However, as Edwin and Chan got into the vehicle, it unexpectedly drove into the sea.
The bodies of Edwin and Chan were later recovered by rescue teams. Sabah Fire and Rescue Department’s assistant director of operations, Hamsa Isnurdini, disclosed that they were alerted about the incident at 10.50pm and immediately dispatched a team of responders to the scene. Additionally, a diving and boating company was engaged to aid in an underwater search for the vehicle and victims.
“The first victim and the submerged car were located at 12.06am, followed by the discovery of the second body at 1.31am,” Hamsa mentioned. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the location, and their remains were handed over to the police for further proceedings. The search and rescue operation concluded at 1.58am, with the police initiating investigations to determine the cause of the tragic accident.
