A 49-year-old man has died in custody at Sungai Besar police station’s lockup. The man was detained for a drug-related offence under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 on Oct 26, according to Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department director Comm Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad. Police personnel discovered the man unconscious and lying face down in his cell at about 3.30am on Oct 27. Medical assistance was sought, but the assistant medical officer present at the scene confirmed at 4.40am that the man had died, as stated by Azri Ahmad in a statement on Saturday (Oct 28).

Coivd-19 tests conducted on the suspect came back negative, and the post-mortem did not reveal any injuries suggestive of foul play, Azri Ahmad added. However, the cause of death is still pending laboratory investigation. The department’s Criminal and Custodial Death Investigation Unit will conduct a thorough investigation from all angles before presenting the findings to the coroner.
