In Kuala Muda, Kedah, a man who was taken into custody by the police has tragically died.
The Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department’s director, Comm Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad, revealed that the 39-year-old man was apprehended on Thursday under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
While the man was being processed at the Kuala Muda District Police Headquarters Narcotic Crime Investigation Department, he complained of feeling unwell.
Responding quickly, the police contacted Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for assistance, and a medical officer promptly arrived at the scene, as shared in a statement on Friday (Sept 8).
The medical officer subsequently confirmed the man’s passing.
On Friday, at 10am, an autopsy was conducted at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, and a Covid-19 test was carried out, returning negative results.
The cause of death remains undetermined at this time, pending further laboratory investigations, according to Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad.
He further stated that, given the circumstances, the case has been classified as a sudden death until the laboratory results are available.
Moreover, the Crime and Death in Custody Investigations Unit will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident before presenting their findings to the coroner.
