KOTA KINABALU: An individual has become missing while another individual drowned while attempting to avoid being captured by maritime officials in the Semporna district on Friday (Oct 27).
These two individuals were part of a group of four people in a vessel that was being pursued by officials in waters off Nusakuya.
Hamsa Isnurdini, the assistant operations director of the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department, explained that the vessel capsized when it was hit by high waves during the pursuit.
Officials managed to capture one of them, while a fourth individual managed to escape.
At 2.19pm, firemen received a report regarding a missing person after the incident.
“We were informed that a man had gone missing during the maritime operation, while another man lost his life,” stated Hamsa in a press release.
According to officials, they were attempting to inspect the boat prior to the incident, Hamsa revealed.
“When the waves struck, all four men on the boat were thrown overboard,” he commented.
The fourth man managed to escape on another vessel, he further added.
Hamsa disclosed that a search operation is currently underway.
