A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and three whippings for raping his 15-year-old sister-in-law. The sentence was issued by Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan after the 41-year-old man pleaded guilty to the crime that occurred at a village house in Papar district on June 9 at 2am.
The accused was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail and whipping for rape. According to the facts of the case, the accused entered the girl’s bedroom by opening the window grille with a screwdriver on the day of the incident.
The victim’s mother discovered the incident on August 17 when she questioned her daughter about the accused visiting her at night. At first, the girl remained silent, but after being pressed by her mother, she revealed that the incident had occurred multiple times, with the last occurrence on June 9. This led to the arrest of the accused the following day.
During mitigation, the accused, who was unrepresented, requested a lenient sentence, citing his responsibilities towards his two children and parents. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus appealed for a deterrent sentence due to the severity and prevalence of the case.
