A man, Rakib Hassan, aged 39, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on Wednesday (Oct 18) after he pleaded guilty to stealing 10 trays of chicken eggs at the Tawau Magistrate’s Court. The charge against him was made under Section 379 of the Penal Code. The accused admitted to stealing eggs worth RM147 from the back of a four-wheel drive vehicle parked at Jalan Dunlop, Tawau at 9.30am on Oct 13. This charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The prosecution for this case was handled by Prosecuting officer Asst Supt Nur Intan Jamrin. The accused did not have any legal representation throughout the court proceedings.
In other news, three men were each fined RM10,000 by the Magistrate’s Court for drink driving. The men, identified as Maaruf Abd Raud, aged 27; Baharuddin Kadir, aged 52; and Yusman Chudeng, aged 44, pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The facts sheet for the case revealed that Maaruf and Baharuddin committed the offence at Jalan Sim Hwa Seng, while Yusman committed the offence at Jalan St Patrick. The incident occurred between 1.10am and 1.45am on Oct 7.
All three men had their alcohol levels tested with a breathalyser, and the results showed that their blood alcohol content exceeded the permissible limit of 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. In addition to the fine, Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin sentenced Maaruf and Baharuddin to three days in jail, and Yusman to four days in jail. Their driving licenses were also suspended for a duration of two years.
The court stated that if the men failed to settle the fines, they would be required to serve a six-month jail term.
