According to Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail, a 34-year-old man was arrested for impersonating a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer and trying to steal RM30,000 from a mosque committee in Ampang.
On Jan 19, the suspect approached the mosque treasurer, claiming to be a MACC officer, and asked him to produce the mosque committee’s chequebook for inspection due to alleged financial discrepancies.
After the suspect left the mosque, the treasurer received a call from a bank informing him that a man had attempted to cash in a cheque for RM30,000 but was rejected. Upon checking the chequebook, the treasurer realized that a piece of cheque was missing.
Following the investigation, the police arrested the suspect on Jan 23 at about 1.35pm. It was revealed that the suspect had prior criminal records and tested positive for methamphetamine. He has been remanded until Jan 27.
