BERA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has called for the enhancement and improvement of the management of Syariah courts, including the positions of Syariah judges and lawyers. This move is aimed at expanding the authority of the Islamic legal system in Malaysia.

In addition, His Majesty emphasized the importance of wise discretion and fairness in decision-making, particularly in cases related to family matters and Syariah criminal offenses.

“Syariah judges, lawyers, and court officials share the collective responsibility of ensuring the smooth running of court proceedings.

“I hope that continuous efforts will be made to strengthen Syariah courts and other Islamic religious institutions,” stated Al-Sultan Abdullah during the official opening of the Bera Syariah Court. The event was attended by his sons, the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, Tengku Panglima Raja Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah, and Tengku Arif Bendahara Tengku Muhammad Iskandar Ri’ Ayatuddin Shah.

Also present were Datuk Mohd Amran Mat Zain, the director-general of the Malaysian Syariah Judiciary Department, who also serves as the Syarie Chief Judge, Pahang Syarie Chief Judge Datuk Abdul Walid Abu Hassan, and the Member of Parliament for Bera and former prime minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In his address, Al-Sultan Abdullah highlighted the Syariah Court as an institution that upholds justice based on Islamic law. He also mentioned the effectiveness of the Sulh (amicable settlement) concept in resolving family disputes. From 2019 to 2022, approximately 85% of Sulh cases registered in courts throughout the country were resolved peacefully through Sulh proceedings, avoiding a trial process,” stated His Majesty.
