In Kota Kinabalu, marine police successfully stopped an attempt to smuggle about RM320,000 worth of cosmetic items into Sabah’s east coast Semporna district. The interception took place when two speedboats were spotted carrying the items during a patrol off Kampung Kuala Bilang at 8.30pm on Tuesday (Feb 27).
The commander of Sabah Region Four Marine Police, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Ariffin, explained that the boats fled the scene upon realizing the presence of the marine police. The authorities gave chase for about 20 minutes, witnessing the individuals on board discarding items into the sea.
Subsequently, the boats managed to escape under the cover of darkness. However, the marine police were able to recover 10 large boxes of cosmetics that had been thrown overboard. Following a search of a nearby mangrove swamp, the two boats were located tied to a mangrove tree.
Upon inspection, 70 more large boxes filled with the same cosmetic items were found on the boats. ACP Ahmad revealed that the seized items are suspected to have originated from the Philippines and are valued at approximately RM320,540. All confiscated items have been transported to the Semporna marine police base for safekeeping.
It was further mentioned that the case will be handed over to the Tawau Pharmacy Department for further investigation. The successful interception of the smuggling attempt marks a significant effort by the marine police in combatting illegal activities in the region.
Such operations play a crucial role in safeguarding the borders and preventing the unlawful entry of contraband goods. By acting swiftly and decisively, the marine police demonstrate their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of the area.
The collaborative effort between various law enforcement agencies is vital in addressing transnational crimes such as smuggling. Through effective coordination and intelligence sharing, authorities are able to disrupt criminal networks and deter similar illicit activities in the future.
This latest success serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in maritime security and the continuous efforts required to combat illegal smuggling activities. The vigilance and dedication of the marine police are instrumental in maintaining order and upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders.
Efforts to enhance surveillance and enforcement measures will be vital in deterring criminal elements from exploiting vulnerable areas for illicit purposes. The commitment of law enforcement agencies remains paramount in ensuring a safe and secure environment for all residents and visitors.
