Leaders of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) have denied rumors that party president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili is stepping down due to health issues. They have clarified that Ongkili, who will turn 70 in October, is still serving as the PBS president.
Deputy president of PBS, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, mentioned that Ongkili has temporarily assigned party matters to a six-member special task force, but he will participate in the upcoming 38th party congress. Gunsalam will deliver Ongkili’s policy speech, while PBS premier advisor Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan will open the congress.
Although Ongkili is currently recuperating from an illness, he remains actively involved. Gunsalam specified that there is a designated timeframe to handle the party’s affairs, but a decision about extending the task force will be made at the congress.
PBS secretary-general, Datuk Julita Majungki, affirmed that Ongkili is in good health and plans to attend the congress. Party information chief, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, mentioned that Ongkili is still in contact with the task force and provides guidance on party matters.
Ongkili has not made any public appearances after losing his Kota Marudu seat in GE15. Gunsalam dismissed speculations about Ongkili potentially stepping aside as PBS president and Pairin temporarily taking over, stating that Ongkili is currently governing the party and they are merely executing his duties.
The special task force includes deputy presidents Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, Datuk Jahid Jahim, Datuk Lu Kim Yen, Majungki, and Bangkuai.
