The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has filed a police report against a TikTok user for sharing 16 videos that are allegedly provocative and misleading. Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran stated that the report was filed because the user, @sophianmohdzain7, allegedly created discomfort and disturbances in public places. Not only was a report filed on September 18, but a complaint was also made to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on September 21.

Rajendran emphasized that actions tarnishing the image of MBPP, slandering the council, and harassing traders in public cannot be allowed to continue. He expressed his belief that anyone can gain publicity through social media, as long as it is done in a respectful manner. This was stated during a press conference after a council meeting at City Hall on September 22.

The council decided to take action after thoroughly reviewing each video posted by the account holder. Rajendran mentioned that the TikTok user had also uploaded similar videos involving other city councils, but MBPP was the first to release an official statement in response.

In the videos, the TikTok user alleged that the council had issued business licenses to foreign nationals, alongside other allegations of improprieties. To clarify, Rajendran asserted that no license had been issued to any individual foreigner. However, foreign nationals are allowed to register under the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) to operate a business in partnership. The approval of business or company registration falls under the jurisdiction of SSM.

Rajendran added that MBPP regularly inspects businesses run by foreign nationals without proper approval. Inspections are carried out in collaboration with the police and other relevant agencies. He assured the public that any criticism, complaints, or opinions about MBPP can be conveyed through the council’s communication channels, including the hotline, Facebook, online reporting system, or by visiting the office in person. Each case will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action will be taken.
