Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon has stated that it is not the appropriate time for comprehensive cooperation between the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and that it is unnecessary. However, he did mention that both parties could still engage in a certain level of cooperation on specific issues to protect the rights and interests of the Chinese communities, provided that DAP aligns with MCA’s principles and goals.

Dr Mah, who is the deputy president of MCA, highlighted that MCA has consistently been the target of attacks and criticisms by DAP for many years, leading to accumulated negative sentiments. Even in the present, some DAP leaders continue to treat MCA as a scapegoat and blame the party for their own failures. This negative reaction from MCA members towards cooperation between the two parties is therefore not surprising.

Furthermore, Dr Mah emphasized that MCA’s political principles and objectives differ from those of DAP. He stated that MCA is unwavering when it comes to safeguarding the rights and interests of the Chinese community and does not resort to making excuses or justifications to maintain power. In contrast, he pointed out that DAP has been inconsistent in its stance, as seen in its changing position on Vision Schools or Sekolah Wawasan when transitioning from the opposition to being in power.

Dr Mah stressed that MCA will never support the establishment of Vision Schools, as the party firmly believes that it would fundamentally alter the essence of Chinese primary schools. He mentioned that while some argue that “politics is the art of the possible,” citing DAP’s willingness to work with Umno despite heavily criticizing it in the past, MCA cannot adopt this approach. He believes it is crucial for MCA to provide checks and balances to the unity government.

When asked about the growing support of Malaysian youths for Perikatan Nasional (PN), Dr Mah stated that MCA would engage in discussions about this trend, as it directly impacts the party’s existence and future work. He urged MCA Youth to be brave and outspoken in questioning governance and national policies, asserting that it is their responsibility as the youth organization of a political party.

Dr Mah also called on MCA Youth members to engage in professional political discussions, using their diverse talents and expertise to not only supervise government policies, but also to provide mature and constructive suggestions. He defended MCA’s right to question government policies, stating that the party has a history of openly opposing unreasonable and unfair policies during the years of Barisan Nasional’s governance.

Dr Mah highlighted the importance of MCA Youth as a learning and grooming platform for future MCA leaders. He encouraged members to maintain a strong mindset and healthy physique, preparing themselves for bigger challenges in the future.
