KUALA LUMPUR: In the upcoming party polls next month, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and former central committee member Tan Chong Seng will go head to head for the position of MCA president. Both candidates submitted their nominations before the nomination process closed at 5pm at Wisma MCA on Monday (Sept 11).
The positions of party deputy president and Wanita MCA deputy chief have only one contestant each. This means that Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon will retain his position as the deputy president, and Tee Hooi Ling will continue as Wanita deputy chief. Wanita MCA chief Wong You Fong is defending her post against Datuk Ooi Siew Kim, a former Wanita secretary-general.
There are seven candidates vying for the four vice-presidential posts. The incumbents, Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Datuk Lim Ban Hong, and Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker, will compete against newcomers Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng, Datuk Lawrence Low, Datuk Nicole Wong Siaw Ting, and Dr Pamela Yong.
For the party Youth chief post, three candidates are in the running – party organising secretary Ling Tian Soon, who is also Yong Peng assemblyman and Johor Exco; Youth secretary-general Daniel Wa Wai How; and Klang MCA Youth member Bernard Chan Kee Siang. There are a total of 48 candidates vying for the 25 central committee member posts.
The MCA Youth and Wanita wings will hold their elections on Sept 23, while the election for the MCA Central Committee will take place on Sept 24. The party polls will involve a total of 5,089 central delegates, including 2,278 central party delegates, 1,066 youth delegates, and 1,745 women delegates.
In addition, 52,736 divisional delegates, comprising 29,151 central party delegates, 5,016 youth delegates, and 18,569 women delegates, will participate in the party polls. A total of 160 polling stations, including 149 divisional polling stations and 11 joint divisional polling stations, will be set up nationwide for the central committee election. The MCA annual general assembly is scheduled for Oct 21 and 22.
