KUALA LUMPUR: According to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, MCA has a right to speak up when policies have a negative impact, as they play a “check and balance” role in the democratic system. The MCA president expressed the party’s support for the unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He clarified that MCA is not a member of the federal Cabinet and is not involved in policy-making at the ministry or Cabinet level. Their role in Parliament remains as a check and balance in the democratic system. Dr Wee stated that MCA will speak up if they feel the policies negatively affect the people, even if DAP looks down on the MCA representatives in the Dewan Rakyat.
The statement from Dr Wee was made in response to an interview with Utusan Malaysia in which DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok stated that MCA was “lost” when asked about the relationship between DAP and MCA in the unity government. Dr Wee felt that the question could have been answered cordially without going off-topic. He then addressed Teresa’s baseless claims and his issues with DAP’s secretary-general Anthony Loke.
Dr Wee highlighted two raised issues: the use of Malaysians’ personal data regarding the information of 33 million vehicle owners in the MyJPJ system and airfares to Sabah and Sarawak. He expressed that the claims are for the good of the people, as it prompted positive actions from the government. He further discussed his involvement in other issues in Parliament, underscoring his right and responsibility to speak up and the importance of respecting differences of opinion and freedom of expression.
