The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken action against a news portal within the boundaries of the law, according to Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister. He highlighted the importance of finding a balance between media freedom, freedom of speech, and responsible reporting. While Fahmi has not been fully briefed on the matter, he trusts that MCMC’s actions are in collaboration with police investigations or in response to public complaints.
Fahmi responded to notable journalists’ calls for MCMC not to hinder responsible news reporting. The journalists expressed concern over MCMC’s recent warnings, editor summonses, and blocking of specific news portals. Fahmi stressed the government’s commitment to press freedom while emphasizing the importance of factual accuracy in news reporting.
Fahmi also revealed plans to introduce the Malaysian Media Council Bill in Parliament next year. He believes that the Malaysian Media Council can provide a platform for discussion and resolution of various issues, serving as an internal control mechanism.
The journalists referenced a recent incident in the Dewan Rakyat, which was aired live and shared on social media platforms. However, the news portal involved was instructed to modify or remove its report on the parliamentary chaos that occurred on September 19. The journalists argued that blaming the news portal for simply reporting the incident was unfair and unacceptable.
