The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has emphasized its crucial role in regulating the communications and multimedia industry in Malaysia. In response to an article criticizing its actions, MCMC reiterates its role and responsibilities as outlined in the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998).
MCMC’s primary duty is to prevent online platforms from being used for illegal activities according to the laws of Malaysia. This includes addressing issues related to false information, offensive content, and defamation. With an increase in news reporting lacking responsibility, sensibility, and accuracy, certain news outlets have been found to spread misleading or inaccurate information.
The rise of converged media, where user-generated content gains prominence and ethical reporting takes a backseat, has worsened this problem. The vast amount of available information online makes it difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction, posing a significant threat to societal harmony.
To address these concerns, MCMC has been engaging in dialogues and meetings with news outlets. They are determined to fulfill their regulatory duty to maintain the integrity of information and ensure societal harmony.
