The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has stated that its actions regarding certain news websites are aimed at ensuring responsible dissemination of information to the public, as well as preventing the spread of slander or misinformation. This response came following a statement by Reporters Without Borders, which criticized the suspension of news websites critical of the government. The MCMC further explained that it operates under the provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and has the national policy objective of protecting Malaysians from online harm caused by misinformation and hate speech.
In addition to this, the MCMC emphasized its responsibilities in safeguarding the integrity of the constitutional monarchy and democratic institutions, particularly against attempts to incite hatred or contempt. It also revealed that one of its key duties is to prevent the misuse of online platforms for offenses under Malaysian laws, which has become increasingly prevalent due to irresponsible and inaccurate reporting. The MCMC highlighted the intentional spreading of misleading information and the publication of inaccurate content by certain news outlets, which can potentially harm the harmony within Malaysia.
To address these issues, the MCMC has the authority and duty to take regulatory action against the dissemination of fake, offensive, and menacing content. However, it also expressed openness to dialogue and regular engagement with senior editors and journalists to address concerns and issues related to freedom of expression. The MCMC aims to collaborate with the media fraternity in combatting the rise of misinformation and malicious disinformation, acknowledging the importance of working together to tackle this issue.
