KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will establish a framework within a month to allow all social media platform providers to register with the agency, making it easier to regulate such platforms in the country, according to Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fadzil said that the MCMC will need some time to complete the framework, including gathering information from external sources and discussions with social media platform providers.

“One of our upcoming initiatives is to ensure that all social media platforms are registered with MCMC. As of now, no one has registered,” he told reporters after appearing on the Suara Anak Muda program at the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (Aswara) on Friday (Dec 1) night.

Fadzil also emphasized that the government currently has no plans to block or close any social media platforms, including TikTok, in the country, especially to prevent the spread of defamatory information on the platform.

However, he stated that the government would take action if any party or platform allowed extremist statements to be widely disseminated.

“In Malaysia, it is more in the domain of other ministries, but we will discuss with them to coordinate future actions once we obtain the necessary information,” he said.

Regarding the Suara Anak Muda program, Fadzil mentioned that it provides an opportunity for the people to hear directly from the minister about the initiatives, policies, successes, and programs of the Madani government.

While the program is currently broadcast on the YouTube platform (Suara Anak Madani), Fadzil said it could be shown on the government’s official platform in the future.
