The Melaka State Education Department has been granted RM15.7 million by the Education Ministry to upgrade and conduct minor maintenance work on the toilets of 225 primary and secondary schools in the state, according to its director, Mohd Ghazali Ahmad.
Mohd Ghazali Ahmad stated that the department has already finished upgrading toilets at 215 schools in just eight weeks, from August 18 to October 12.
He added that only 10 schools are still undergoing the final stage of the upgrade, with an authorized value of RM70,000.
According to Bernama, he stated that “We believe the project can be completed soon with a six-month defects liability period after the completion date.”
He also mentioned that the schools have not issued any complaints about the upgrades.
Furthermore, he outlined that RM6.16 million has been allocated to upgrade 88 schools in central Melaka, while RM9.59 million has been distributed to the state Implementation Coordination Unit and the District And Land Offices in Jasin and Alor Gajah for 137 schools in the two districts.
Among the approved scope of work by the Education Ministry include renovations and upgrading of toilets, sewerage system, rewiring, replacement of electrical equipment, procurement of toilet equipment and accessories, and other maintenance activities.
Mohd Ghazali stated that the contractors for projects under the Melaka State Education Department were chosen through the tender process, while projects under the State Development Office and Jasin and Alor Gajah District And Land Offices were appointed directly, in line with approval from the Finance Ministry.
He highlighted that the projects are being monitored jointly by the Melaka State Education Department, the State Development Office, and Jasin and Alor Gajah District And Land Offices, with assistant engineers managing projects under the relevant agencies, including himself.
