The Immigration Department in Melaka conducted a raid around Melaka Sentral and detained 23 undocumented migrant workers. The raid took place at 2.30pm on Sunday (Oct 1) and a total of 199 foreigners were checked, with 102 of them being Myanmar nationals. Anirwan Fauzee Mohd Aini, the director of Melaka Immigration, stated that out of the 23 detainees, 16 were from Myanmar and the rest were from Bangladesh. The region where the raid occurred, known as “Little Dhaka,” is a popular spot for foreign workers, with many operating roadside stalls as well as being present at the bus terminal and its surrounding commercial areas.
Datuk Kalsom Noordin, the state women, family development, and welfare committee chairman, explained the significance of the raid in curbing the influx of undocumented migrants. She mentioned that raids like this would be carried out regularly to maintain the security of the constituency. The raid concluded at 5pm and involved 23 Immigration officers, 21 enforcement officers from the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), and five police officers.
According to the Immigration Act 1959, all those detained are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) for not possessing a valid entry pass into Malaysia.
