EDRA Melaka Power Plant (EMPP) has been awarded the Power Magazine’s Top Plant Award in the Gas Category at the Experience Power Conference. The award recognizes the excellent management system of EMPP in 2022, achieved through the use of advanced technology to maximize efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

The award also acknowledges the effective operations and maintenance practices of EMPP’s team, ensuring the power plant runs sustainably, safely, and economically. Owned and operated by Edra Energy Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd, EMPP is the largest combined cycle gas turbine power plant in South-East Asia, with a total capacity of 2,242MW.

Commissioned on February 28th, 2022, EMPP consists of three generating blocks featuring the world’s most advanced and efficient 9HA.02 gas turbine technology. Anbarasan Sellappan, the deputy chief operating officer of Edra, expressed delight over the international recognition, emphasizing the dedication and high-quality standards demonstrated by the project’s employees.

EMPP was constructed in response to the Malaysian government’s recommendation to address climate change and deliver secure and reliable electricity supply in Peninsular Malaysia. It is capable of generating approximately 19.6GW of electricity annually, meeting about 10% of the region’s total power demand. The power plant also prioritizes safety, achieving nearly 15 million safe man-hours without any lost time injuries since construction began in December 2017.

Furthermore, EMPP contributes to economic growth by attracting domestic and international investments and supporting industrial and commercial developments. It is expected to drive Malaysia’s economy to new heights. The power plant also plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of Melaka, providing employment opportunities and supporting education, sports, and welfare initiatives within the local community.
