MELAKA: The private sector in Melaka is not required to observe the additional public holiday this Monday (Aug 26) to celebrate the 75th birthday of the Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening (Aug 22), the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department (JTKSM) said the additional public holiday is optional and not mandatory for private sector employees.

“However, any employer who chooses to observe the 75th birthday of the Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri as a public holiday must grant paid leave to employees on Aug 26, 2024,” the statement read.

“Employers may, with employee consent, substitute the additional holiday with another day (other than Aug 26) in accordance with Section 60D(1A) of the Employment Act 1955,” it added.

The Melaka government had previously declared Monday as an additional public holiday in conjunction with the 75th birthday of the Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka, in line with Section 9(1) of the Holidays Act 1951 (Act 369). – Bernama
