    MELAKA: The state Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) spent RM1.19 million for the implementation of the Plant Pest Eradication Programme this year.

    State senior Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said the cost involved the procurement of 316 traps of various types to catch monkeys and wild boars.

    “All these traps will be placed in areas with reported human-wildlife conflicts in stages beginning July this year,” he said at the State Legislative Assembly sitting at Seri Negeri Complex, Ayer Keroh here on Wednesday (Aug 2).

    He said this in reply to a supplementary question from Rosli Abdullah (BN-Kuala Linggi) on the initiatives taken to resolve the issue where wildlife such as monkeys often trespass into villages and cause damage to property.

    According to Rais, there were a total of 1,972 complaints about wildlife disturbance in 2022, with macaque disturbance receiving the most at 1,702, wild boar (166), dusky leaf monkeys (54), and foxes (24).

    The state Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) has allocated RM1.19 million for the implementation of the Plant Pest Eradication Programme this year. This initiative aims to address the issue of wildlife encroachment into villages and damage to property.

    Datuk Rais Yasin, the senior Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman, revealed that the allocated funds will be used to procure 316 traps of various types to catch monkeys and wild boars. These traps will be deployed in areas with reported human-wildlife conflicts, starting from July this year.

    Rais made this announcement during the State Legislative Assembly sitting at Seri Negeri Complex in Ayer Keroh on Wednesday, August 2. He provided this information in response to a supplementary question from Rosli Abdullah (BN-Kuala Linggi) regarding the measures taken to address the issue.

    According to Rais, a total of 1,972 complaints regarding wildlife disturbance were reported in 2022. The majority of the complaints were related to macaque disturbance, accounting for 1,702 cases. Other reported disturbances included those caused by wild boars (166 cases), dusky leaf monkeys (54 cases), and foxes (24 cases).

    To mitigate these disturbances, a total of 3,996 macaques and 1,096 wild boars were culled during the same period, as reported by Rais.

    By implementing the Plant Pest Eradication Programme and setting up traps in conflict areas, the state Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia aims to effectively reduce the encroachment of wildlife into villages and minimize property damage. These efforts are crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of both humans and wildlife in the region.
