MELAKA: Datuk Rais Yasin, the Melaka Housing and Local Government, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman, has announced that the Melaka government is considering proposals from animal rights groups regarding the management of stray animals in the state. Rais stated that the state government is currently reviewing various suggestions made by animal welfare organizations in order to effectively handle the issue of homeless animals, starting with stray dogs and waiting for recommendations on feral cats. He made these remarks during the launch of a National Day program at a supermarket dedicated to cats in Taman Paya Rumput.
The CEO of the Cat Supermarket, Datuk Chew Chert Fong, and representatives from local non-governmental organizations were also present at the event. Rais emphasized the state government’s commitment to the welfare of strays and encouraged the proper care of these animals, particularly dogs. He further mentioned the government’s intention to collaborate with all stakeholders to find a comprehensive solution to this problem. Rais also expressed admiration for the Cat Supermarket, the largest of its kind in the country, and lauded its contribution to local employment.
In a separate statement, Rais shared that the decision to transform a 2.4km stretch in Bandar Hilir, a popular tourist area, into a vehicle-free zone on Saturdays has received positive feedback from various sources. The state government will continue to gather feedback to determine whether the trial run, which began on August 19, should be extended. During this trial period, certain roads including Jalan Istana, Jalan Mahkamah, Jalan Gereja, Lorong Gereja, Jalan Laksamana, and sections of Jalan Tun Khalil Yaakob and Jalan Merdeka are closed between 6pm and midnight.
The proposal to convert Bandar Hilir into a car-free zone was initially put forward by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh in May, but it faced opposition from traders in the vicinity.
