The Duyong assemblyman, Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halim, has been awarded an honorary fifth-dan karate black belt for his efforts in promoting diversity among his constituents in Melaka. The recognition was given by the Melaka Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate-Do Association, with its president, Shihan J. Manoharan, stating that the decision was made after careful evaluation of Mohd Noor Helmy’s contributions to all races in Duyong. Manoharan described him as a lovable character who serves and attends to the needs of all races in his constituency.
The honorary black belts are given to individuals who have provided exceptional service to the community. Manoharan mentioned that it was a challenging decision to award the honor, as certain criteria needed to be fulfilled, but Mohd Noor Helmy’s dedication to serving all races made him deserving of the recognition.
Prior to receiving the honorary black belt, Mohd Noor Helmy participated in the association’s grand group training event at SJKC Pay Teck’s school hall. The event, which aimed to promote mental strength through Okinawan Karate, was attended by 400 people and launched by Melaka’s youth, sports, and non-governmental organizations committee chairman, V.P Shanmugam. Melaka Historic City Council mayor, Datuk Shadan Othman, also graced the event.
Manoharan explained that the focus of the training was to equip schoolchildren with the skills to face various challenges in their lives. He emphasized that Okinawan Karate teaches intricate movements designed to maintain strong forms of movement and coordination while building muscle. Additionally, it instills self-confidence and encourages a healthy lifestyle.
