Melaka recently conducted its first simulated tourist boat accident as part of its preparations for possible emergencies during Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM 2024). The drill, organized by the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM) and Putra Specialist Hospital (PSHMB), aimed to assess the readiness of the Emergency Response Team.

According to Datuk Murad Husin, the CEO of PPSPM, the specialized rescue team consists of nine members who possess international certification in life-saving procedures. Murad Husin emphasized the importance of being prepared for various emergency situations, including instances where people may fall into the river while walking along its banks. He cited a case earlier this year where a disabled man drowned in the river as an example of the need to cover these situations in emergency response planning.

The drill also aimed to improve coordination and efficiency among different rescue agencies in quickly rescuing people from the water. A total of 43 rescue personnel from various departments, including Melaka Hospital, participated in the exercise. Their challenge was to rescue injured tourists trapped on the boat, individuals who fell into the river, and to manage a drowned victim resulting from the simulated collision between a Melaka River Cruise boat and another river maintenance craft.

The drill provided an opportunity for the rescue team to test their skills and procedures, ensuring that they are adequately prepared to respond to emergencies that may occur during TMM 2024. The involvement of multiple agencies and departments also promoted collaboration and coordination in emergency response efforts. By conducting such drills, Melaka aims to enhance the overall safety and security of visitors during the upcoming tourism year.
