KOTA BARU: The government’s Menu Rahmah initiative, introduced in January this year, has quickly gained popularity not only among low-income earners but also among students in higher learning institutions. Business owners like Nor Hazelizan Mamat, the owner of Ayang Cafe, have seen a significant boost in their business since offering the affordable meals. Nor Hazelizan is now able to earn almost RM1,000 a day from the 10 Menu Rahmah options available.
Nor Hazelizan shared, “My customers prefer Menu Rahmah because each set, which includes rice and chicken with iced tea, or ‘roti ayang’ with iced tea, or nasi kerabu with iced tea, only costs RM5. It is an affordable yet fulfilling option.” She also expressed the hope that the government would monitor the prices of wet goods and daily necessities to alleviate any burden on traders participating in the initiative.
Nik Muhammad Luqman Al-Hakim, a student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Kelantan, described Menu Rahmah as a “saviour” for students like him. He mentioned that the complete menu, including rice, chicken or fish, vegetables, and a drink, can be purchased for as low as RM5. This initiative has helped students save money on their daily expenses, and Nik Muhammad hopes that it can be expanded to benefit even more people.
Zarina Abdullah, a chicken trader, explained that the Menu Rahmah initiative has not only positively impacted restaurant operators but also suppliers of raw materials. She revealed that she supplies between 150 and 200 raw chickens, priced at around RM15 each, to seven eateries in the district that serve Menu Rahmah.
The Kelantan Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director, Azman Ismail, shared that over 100 food premises across Kelantan now offer Menu Rahmah meals. Kota Baru has the highest number of premises offering the menu, followed by Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Jeli, Machang, Kuala Krai, and Gua Musang.
