The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued hot weather advisories for three locations in Kedah. The affected areas are Pokok Sena, Pendang, and Baling, with a Stage 1 (caution) advisory. For this stage, daily temperatures can range between 35°C to 37°C for at least three consecutive days,” the department said in a statement on Saturday (Feb 3).

MetMalaysia has advised the public to refer to https://www.met.gov.my/iklim/status-cuaca-panas/ for more information.

MetMalaysia director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said that there are usually fewer thunderstorms and less rain in the early part of February until the northeast monsoon ends in March. He added that the El Nino phenomenon, bringing drier conditions, had been present since the middle of last year. Muhammad Helmi said that a strong El Nino could reduce rainfall and increase temperatures nationwide. “This is especially for states in the northern peninsula, the interior of Perak, Kelantan, Pahang, and Sabah,” he said in a statement.

The El Nino phenomenon began in the middle of last year and can last up to 18 months.
