KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran has affirmed that the party will support the election machinery to ensure victory for candidates from the unity government during the state polls.
MIC, a component party of Barisan Nasional, has pledged full support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership as Prime Minister for the entire five-year term.
During a special meeting with Anwar on Wednesday (Aug 2), Vigneswaran and other MIC leaders rose from their seats as a symbolic gesture to express their support. The meeting took place at the MIC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the Barisan chairman and Umno president, was also present at the meeting.
Speaking at a press conference held after the meeting, Vigneswaran stated that MIC will actively assist candidates from Barisan and Pakatan Harapan, particularly in constituencies with a significant Indian population.
Earlier, Barisan component parties MCA and MIC announced that they would not be fielding candidates in the state polls scheduled to be held in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Kedah, and Terengganu.
The Election Commission has set Aug 12 as the polling day, with Aug 8 designated for early voting. – Bernama
