In Melaka, a foreigner aged 27 crashed his car into an eatery on Jalan Bendahara due to experiencing microsleep, according to Melaka police. The incident occurred at 8.40pm on Saturday (March 23) near the weekend car-free zone in Bandar Hilir, where there was minimal traffic.
Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit revealed that the driver, who works as an administrative assistant in Durian Tunggal, did not possess a valid driving licence. The man claimed he was hurrying to Melaka Hospital as his wife was in labor, resulting in the accident.
After being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, it was determined that the driver’s injuries were minor. The crash took place as he was heading towards Melaka Hospital from Jalan Bendahara.
It is suggested that the current heatwave may contribute to an increased risk of microsleep, which can be hazardous for drivers. Police data indicates that between 2011 and 2021, 1,305 fatalities were linked to drivers falling asleep at the wheel due to fatigue.
