The government may consider releasing Datuk Seri Najib Razak from jail, according to Khairy Jamaluddin. This comes in response to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for 47 graft charges related to Yayasan Akalbudi funds. Khairy Jamaluddin, the former Umno Youth chief, believes that freeing former prime minister Najib Razak, known by supporters as “Bossku,” would add more value to the unity government comprising both Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional.

Khairy further emphasizes that between “Bossku” and Ahmad Zahid, it would be Najib who brings more benefit to Pakatan-Barisan in stopping the “green wave.” On the latest episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast on Wednesday (Sept 6), Khairy expressed his opinion that it would be best to let Najib out as he would contribute more value. Co-host Shahril Hamdan also agrees that Najib’s release cannot be ruled out.

While Ahmad Zahid’s supporters would congratulate him for his freedom, there is growing concern about Najib’s situation. Shahril Hamdan, the former Umno information chief, states that the question about Najib’s release can no longer be avoided. He also raises concerns about how this matter may cause tensions within Umno and how long it will take for it to be resolved.

Khairy adds that Najib’s release is inevitable and only a matter of time. The former Cabinet minister believes that “Bossku” will not serve his full sentence, whether it is this year or the next. Najib was sentenced to 12 years in jail and a RM210 million fine in July 2020 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court. This was after he was found guilty of seven charges relating to the RM42 million SRC International case, which involved criminal breach of trust, money laundering, and abuse of position linked to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) sovereign fund.

In August 2022, the Federal Court rejected Najib’s final appeal and upheld his sentence. However, Khairy believes that Najib’s release is imminent despite the conviction.
