The Mentri Besar of Johor, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, has urged political parties campaigning in the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats by-elections to maintain harmony and respect the “Johor way”. He reminded all parties to conduct themselves properly and not to be influenced by campaigning styles in other states. Datuk Onn believes that the people of Johor understand the unique approach to campaigning in the state.
During nomination day for the Simpang Jeram state seat at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim, several banners were put up in Pulai declaring that Umno branches in the Pulai Umno division had rejected Pakatan Harapan candidate Suhaizan Kaiat. However, division chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed dismissed these claims, stating that they were a tactic by political opponents. He assured Pakatan and Suhaizan that the division will support the unity government candidate to defend the Pulai parliamentary seat.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat issued a reminder to all political parties to not touch on 3R (race, religion, and royalty) throughout the campaign period. He also mentioned that 1,200 policemen had been deployed to Pulai and 500 to Simpang Jeram to ensure security during the by-elections. Polling day for both Pulai and Simpang Jeram has been scheduled for September 9, with early voting on September 5.
